In the early hours of a Wednesday morning, the life of 16-year-old Daekorion Sultzer was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On July 13, 2022, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the Woods at Oak Crossing apartments on Merrick Way, located on the city's northwest side, shortly before 1:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting. There, in the hallway of an apartment building, they found the young male teenager suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic scene. Police later discovered that three other individuals, two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old, had also sustained gunshot wounds in the same incident and had arrived at local hospitals. Their conditions ranged from good to critical but stable. Detectives believe all the victims were connected to the events that unfolded on Merrick Way that night.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward to help piece together the circumstances that led to the death of Daekorion Sultzer and the injury of the three others.
