On a Tuesday morning in Indianapolis, the life of 30-year-old Dustin Alan Phipps came to an abrupt and violent end. The male victim was at a Marathon gas station on Southeastern Avenue on November 15, 2022, when a confrontation unfolded that would leave him fatally wounded. Events began to spiral when Anvictor Butler, then 46, went inside the gas station, leaving his Chevrolet Malibu unattended.
It was then that Phipps entered the vehicle and attempted to drive away.
Surveillance footage from the scene captured the moments that followed. Butler is seen running out of the gas station and firing two shots into the driver's side of the Malibu as Phipps was driving away. Struck by the gunfire, Phipps lost control of the car, which then veered off the road and crashed into a tree in a nearby yard. A witness who lived close by reported hearing someone ask the man to get out of the car before he took off and shots were fired. Phipps was discovered in the wrecked vehicle and rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Butler fled the scene. However, he later surrendered to the authorities after consulting with a lawyer. He also turned over the Glock. 357 that was allegedly used in the shooting. Butler was subsequently arrested and faced a preliminary charge of murder in connection with Phipps' death. It was later reported that the vehicle Butler was driving had been reported stolen months prior, and that Butler himself was a convicted felon who was not legally permitted to have a firearm. Phipps' brother expressed his sorrow, stating that his brother was in 'a pretty deep place' and that he wished there could have been other ways to help him.
