On August 23, 2022, a violent confrontation unfolded in Albany, Indiana, a community located in Delaware County near Muncie, resulting in the death of 59-year-old male Gerald Lee 'Gary' Copley. The incident occurred outside Copley’s residence on East 500 North Road where he had lived for many years. Copley, known for his work as a mechanic and custodian as well as his love for drag racing and family, was found deceased in his driveway, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The brutality of the attack shocked the local community, particularly given the senseless nature of the motive revealed by investigators.
Law enforcement officers from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a shooting. Witnesses played a crucial role in the immediate investigation; one individual reported seeing a black Ford F-250 truck in Copley's driveway and observed a man exiting the vehicle with a firearm. This witness watched as the assailant shot Copley multiple times before getting back into the truck and fleeing the scene. Another witness subsequently discovered Copley’s body leaning against the house and confirmed he had succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Copley’s neighbor, 29-year-old Cy E. Alley. Deputies and a SWAT team located Alley at his nearby residence and took him into custody without further violence. During questioning, Alley provided a disturbing confession, admitting that he had driven to Copley’s home with the specific intent to kill him. Alley told detectives that he believed Copley was hacking into his electrical network and interfering with his power supply, a delusion that fueled his rage. He detailed how he used a 12-gauge Winchester pump-action shotgun to shoot his neighbor four times. Evidence presented later would show that Alley shot Copley, paused to reload the weapon, and then shot him again, an action prosecutors described as 'predatory.'
Cy Alley was charged with murder and a sentencing enhancement for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During the legal proceedings, it was noted that Alley displayed no remorse for his actions. The case went to trial in September 2023, where a Delaware County jury deliberated for approximately 20 minutes before returning a guilty verdict. In October 2023, the judge sentenced Alley to 60 years in prison for the murder charge, with an additional 10 years added for the firearm enhancement, resulting in a total sentence of 70 years. The prosecutor emphasized that the severe sentence was necessary to ensure the safety of the community from a dangerous individual who had executed his neighbor over a baseless suspicion.
