On a late summer evening in Indianapolis, 19-year-old Da'Kylen White, a male who was an expecting father, was fatally shot while inside his vehicle. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on September 4, 2022, in the 4200 block of North High School Road, near West 46th Street. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered White, who was pronounced dead by medics.
The investigation swiftly pointed to a suspect, thanks in part to
cooperation from the community and security footage from a nearby convenience store. The footage captured 22-year-old Julius Beverly, who was described as a friend of White's, getting out of the passenger side of White’s car before re-entering and firing multiple shots, striking White in the head. The video also showed Beverly taking something from near White's waist before fleeing the scene with another individual who had been in the back passenger seat. Responding officers noted that the firearm holster on White's waist was empty. People who knew both men stated they were friends and considered each other family.
Julius Beverly was arrested on September 7, 2022. Following a two-day trial in December 2024, a jury found Beverly guilty on two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. In January 2025, Beverly was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the murder. The Marion County Prosecutor, Ryan Mears, commented that the tragedy was the result of a young person impulsively using a firearm to settle a simple dispute and that nothing was worth the loss of Mr. White's life.
