In the autumn of 2022, a wave of violence cut short the life of 19-year-old Yael Edu Esparza in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the evening of Sunday, October 2, 2022, Esparza, a Hispanic male, was operating his vehicle in the 300 block of West Wildwood Avenue when an assailant fired numerous rounds at him. The incident occurred at approximately 9:18 PM, shattering the calm of the neighborhood located near South Wayne Elementary.
First responders, including the Fort Wayne Police Department, the
Fort Wayne Fire Department, and Three Rivers Ambulance, arrived at the scene to find Esparza suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Lutheran Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Yael Edu Esparza was pronounced dead upon arrival. His death marked the 19th homicide in Fort Wayne and Allen County for the year 2022.
The Allen County Coroner's Office later conducted an autopsy and confirmed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, ruling the manner of death a homicide. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement initiated an investigation that swiftly led to a suspect. A short time after the incident, a 16-year-old male was apprehended on West Leith Street in connection with the fatal shooting.
The juvenile suspect, who has not been publicly named, was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Yael Edu Esparza. The case was set to be heard in court to determine if the 16-year-old would be waived into the adult court system to face the murder charge.
