On the evening of Friday, October 14, 2022, emergency responders were dispatched to a residence in Union Township, Porter County, Indiana, following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene around 10:15 p.m., authorities discovered 18-year-old Andrew Nicholas Lenahan suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, which took place inside a home, immediately launched an investigation by the Porter County Sheriff’s Office into the circumstances surrounding the fatal discharge of the firearm.
Investigators determined that a 17-year-old female was involved in the shooting. According to court documents later unsealed, the events unfolded when the teenager, identified as Dakota Martinez-Kestle, handled a firearm that was present in the room. The gun discharged, striking Lenahan and causing his death. Initially detained as a juvenile, the severity of the incident and the nature of the evidence led prosecutors to seek a waiver to try the suspect in adult court.
Dakota Martinez-Kestle was subsequently charged as an adult with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony. Ultimately, the case was resolved through a plea agreement. As part of her sentence, the court mandated mental health therapy, acknowledging the complex and tragic nature of the events that led to the loss of life.
