In the winter of 2023, the life of 24-year-old Jalen Hurd was tragically cut short in Gary, Indiana. On the afternoon of Monday, January 9, 2023, at approximately 12:29 PM, police responded to calls of shots fired in the 400 block of Massachusetts Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hurd in the parking lot of a business, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Jalen TaRay Hurd, known to his loved ones as 'JayBall' and 'Zach,' was born on August 12, 1998. He was a graduate of Gary Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy and had a passion for basketball, having played AAU and biddy basketball in his youth. He was remembered for his immense love for his family and friends and his profound sense of loyalty.
The investigation into Hurd's death led authorities to identify a suspect through a combination of surveillance footage, vehicle records, and cell phone data. Keeon Jamarr Lee, a 29-year-old man from Indianapolis, was subsequently arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Evidence was recovered from a Buick Lacrosse registered to Lee, further linking him to the crime that occurred near the Hudson-Campbell Fitness Center.
Initially facing a murder charge, Lee later entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter with a firearm enhancement. In December 2025, a judge sentenced Lee to 35 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. The sentence consists of 25 years for the manslaughter conviction and an additional 10 years for the firearm enhancement. Following the completion of his sentence, he will be placed on lifetime parole.
