In the late summer of 2023, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Gary, Indiana, leading to the untimely death of 5-year-old Edan Oliver Johnson. The young boy was visiting relatives at a home in the 2400 block of Filmore Street on August 30th when the tragedy occurred. Also present at the residence was a 17-year-old girl and a 32-year-old man, both visiting from Chicago.
According to reports, the man had been permitted by the homeowners to be at the house to check on the children.
He later admitted to law enforcement that he had taken off his handgun and then fallen asleep. It was this unsecured firearm that ultimately led to the fatal event. Young Edan sustained a single gunshot wound.
The Lake County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled the boy's death as accidental. While the man who owned the firearm was identified and questioned, no charges had been filed in the immediate weeks following the incident. The Gary Police Department continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the devastating loss of the young male child. The community was left to mourn the loss of a life cut tragically short due to the presence of an unsecured weapon.
