On a cold December day in Indianapolis, a young mother's life was cut tragically short, leaving a void in the lives of her four small children. DeJanelle Gaines, a 24-year-old Black female, became a victim of a devastating act of domestic violence that ended in a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded on December 19, 2022, at an apartment on Cloverleaf Terrace on the city's west side.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting and arrived to a
grim scene. Inside the apartment, they found Gaines and 26-year-old Tayveon Ward, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gaines was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The Marion County Coroner's Office subsequently determined that Gaines' death was a homicide and Ward's was a suicide. Investigators concluded that Ward had shot Gaines before turning the gun on himself. The investigation revealed a history of domestic violence, a fact confirmed by Gaines' mother, Tanya Myles. In the wake of her daughter's death, Myles made a heartfelt plea to other women in abusive situations to seek help before it's too late.
The tragedy left Gaines' four young children, who were five, three, two, and one at the time, without their mother. The family, already grappling with their immense loss, faced the additional challenge of raising the children and providing them with the support needed to cope with the trauma they had experienced. While the investigation into the specific circumstances of the shooting is considered ongoing by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the case is classified as a murder-suicide, and as such, there will be no arrests or trial. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young life and confront the harsh realities of domestic violence.
