Trooper Garland West Fisher, Jr., a 33-year-old Virginia State Police officer, tragically lost his life on November 15, 1976. The incident occurred during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 85, south of Petersburg, Virginia. Unbeknownst to Trooper Fisher, the driver he stopped was a 32-year-old suspect wanted for a prior kidnapping. During the stop, the suspect managed to disarm Trooper Fisher and shot him. The suspect then forced Trooper Fisher to drive towards Atlanta, Georgia.
