Detective J. Peyton Stewart, aged 57, was tragically killed on May 24, 1927, in Petersburg, Virginia. Stewart, a dedicated officer with 20 years of service in the Petersburg Bureau of Police, was investigating two brothers who were loitering near Halifax Street in the city's New Market district. During the investigation, a confrontation ensued, leading Detective Stewart to attempt an arrest. In the midst of this struggle, one of the brothers shot and killed Stewart, also wounding a bystander.
