Patrolman Dennis Jerome Roberts, aged 32, tragically lost his life on March 20, 1981, in Newport News, Virginia. Roberts, a dedicated officer of the Newport News Police Department, was off-duty and working as a security guard at a department store near the intersection of 29th Street and Washington Avenue when the incident occurred. While attempting to arrest a shoplifter, Roberts was shot and killed by the suspect.
