In the spring of 1981, the city of Newport News, Virginia, was rocked by the tragic death of Patrolman Dennis Jerome Roberts, a 32-year-old man who had dedicated his life to service. On March 20, Roberts, an officer with the Newport News Police Department for nearly 11 years, was off-duty and working a secondary job as a security guard at a downtown department store near the intersection of 29th Street and Washington Avenue.
