In the quiet community of Naola, Virginia, a grim tragedy unfolded on September 15, 1987, forever altering the lives of the Buchanan family. On that day, Douglas Buchanan Sr., his 31-year-old wife Geraldine Patterson Buchanan, and their two young sons, 13-year-old Donald and 10-year-old Joel, were brutally murdered in their own home. The architect of this horrific event was a member of their own family, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr., the 19-year-old son of Douglas Sr.
and stepson of Geraldine.
The prelude to the violence was an argument between Buchanan Jr. and his father. According to later testimony, Douglas Sr. made disparaging remarks about his son's deceased biological mother, which acted as a catalyst for the ensuing rampage. Armed with a. 22-caliber rifle, Buchanan Jr. first shot his father. He then proceeded to kill his stepmother and two half-brothers. The brutality of the act was stark; after shooting his 13-year-old half-brother, who was still showing signs of life, Buchanan Jr. retrieved a knife and stabbed him multiple times.
The investigation swiftly led to Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr. as the sole suspect. He was arrested and charged with capital murder for the deaths of his father, stepmother, and half-brothers. His wife at the time, Christianne, was also implicated for her role in planning the killings and was subsequently sentenced to four life terms in prison.
During his trial, Buchanan Jr.'s defense presented evidence of a troubled family life and the emotional turmoil he experienced following his mother's death from cancer and his father's subsequent remarriage. A psychiatrist testified that Buchanan Jr. was under extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the murders. Despite this, the jury found him guilty of capital murder. In 1988, he was sentenced to death. Additionally, he received four life sentences for first-degree murder and further time for firearm convictions. Following a decade of legal appeals, which included a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Douglas McArthur Buchanan Jr. was executed by lethal injection on March 18, 1998, at the Greensville Correctional Center in Virginia.
