Stafford E. Beckett, a 31-year-old male federal prohibition agent, was killed on March 21, 1921, in El Paso, Texas. Beckett, along with his partner Narcotics Agent Charles E. Wood, was executing a federal search warrant at the C.P. Sherman ranch near El Paso. The agents were ambushed by gunfire from Sherman and other suspects hiding on the ranch. The gunfight lasted over two hours, during which both Beckett and Wood were fatally shot.
