In the early morning hours of May 13, 2017, the life of 68-year-old Haywood Maurice Carter, known affectionately as 'Biscuit,' was tragically cut short in what police have described as a targeted home invasion in Danville, Virginia. Carter, a Black male and a veteran of the United States Army, was inside his residence at 618 Shelton Street when the violent intrusion occurred.
He suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Danville Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Carter's death. Investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Despite their efforts and the initial belief that the attack was not random, the investigation has yet to result in any publicly announced arrests or the identification of any suspects. The case has been featured by crime-solving organizations in the hopes of generating new leads from the community.
The community was left in shock and mourning following the death of the well-known and respected veteran. In the wake of the tragedy, friends, family, and neighbors gathered for a vigil to honor his memory and to call for an end to the violence that had claimed his life.
