Detective Garland Lindwood Joyner Jr., a 39-year-old officer from the Portsmouth Police Department in Virginia, tragically lost his life on March 18, 1984. His body was discovered in Warwick Creek, which borders Gates and Chowan counties in North Carolina. Initially, his death was ruled a suicide, but this classification was later changed to homicide in 2014 after new evidence emerged.
