In the quiet, developing neighborhoods of Henrico, Virginia, a dedicated officer's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. Donald A. Stillman, a 28-year-old White / Caucasian male, served his community as a Henrico County Police Officer for seven years. His commitment to protecting the public was unwavering, a dedication that would ultimately lead him into a fatal confrontation.
On the evening of November 8, 1984, Officer Stillman was on patrol, accompanied by a ride-along. His attention was drawn to a suspicious vehicle parked in a residential area that was still under construction. Unbeknownst to the officer, the occupant of the vehicle had just sexually assaulted a woman he had abducted from a nearby gas station. As Officer Stillman approached the car, the victim courageously ran towards him, and the suspect fled into the nearby woods.
Without hesitation, Officer Stillman gave chase, pursuing the suspect into the darkness of the wooded area along Old Compton Road. He managed to catch up to and apprehend the man. However, a violent struggle ensued before the suspect could be fully subdued and handcuffed. In the chaotic moments that followed, the suspect gained control of Officer Stillman's. 38 caliber handgun and fired, shooting the officer twice in the head.
The following day, an extensive investigation led to the apprehension of the suspect responsible for the murder of Officer Stillman. The man was subsequently convicted of the officer's murder and was sentenced to serve life in prison for his crimes. Officer Stillman was survived by his expectant wife, a poignant reminder of the future that was stolen from him. His sacrifice remains a solemn and honored memory within the Henrico County Police Department and the community he served.
