On August 28, 2022, at approximately 5:21 a.m., Albuquerque police officers responded to a shooting incident at 9223 Marron Circle NE, near Lomas Boulevard and I-25. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals with fatal gunshot wounds: 49-year-old Bernabe 'Bernie Mac' Jurado and 33-year-old Nicole Amaya. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, a dispute had occurred between Amaya and the girlfriend of 27-year-old suspect, Jayme Olson. The altercation, reportedly over money and property, escalated into a physical confrontation. Witnesses stated that Olson intervened by shooting Amaya. Subsequently, Olson allegedly shot Jurado, who was present as a witness to the initial shooting.
Following the incident, Olson evaded immediate capture. However, on November 28, 2022, he was apprehended by the U.S. Marshal Service in Mountainair, New Mexico. Olson faced charges including two open counts of murder and tampering with evidence. He was subsequently booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.
On December 16, 2022, Olson appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He remained in custody pending trial.
Bernabe Jurado, affectionately known as 'Bernie Mac,' was born on October 8, 1972. He was survived by his wife, Norma, and their children: Victor, Bernie, Laura, Alejandra, and Bianca. A visitation was held on September 8, 2022, followed by a service on September 9, 2022, at Reflections Chapel in Albuquerque. He was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
