In the summer of 2022, a violent altercation in Southwest Albuquerque set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately lead to the death of 35-year-old Jaron Monte. On July 2nd, a dispute between Jaron and a relative escalated tragically, resulting in Jaron being shot. Though he survived the initial incident and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, the severity of his injuries proved to be overwhelming.
For four days, Jaron Monte fought for his life.
However, on July 6, 2022, he succumbed to the gunshot wounds he had sustained. Following his death, the Albuquerque Police Department's investigation into the shooting was reclassified as a homicide. Detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit had spoken with Jaron after the incident, at which time he indicated that he did not wish to press charges against his family member.
The individual who allegedly shot Jaron was also injured during the altercation and received medical treatment. This person provided a statement to law enforcement but was released pending further investigation, partly due to Jaron's refusal to press charges. As of the months following his passing on January 3, 2023, there have been no arrests made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly named. The case remains an open and active homicide investigation with the Albuquerque Police Department.
