On the evening of November 29, 2022, 17-year-old Durell Brown Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, tragically lost his life in a fatal shooting. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Walmart located near Parham and Quioccasin Roads in Henrico County. Earlier that evening, Brown had informed his mother that he was going to visit his girlfriend and then head to a music studio.
He never made it home.
The Henrico Police were the ones to deliver the devastating news to his family later that night. Investigators began to piece together the events of that evening, determining that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident. Their efforts to follow up on leads and tips from the community quickly led to progress in the case.
Within days, on December 1, 2022, the first suspect, 18-year-old Javion Peroune, turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Peroune was held without bond at the Henrico County Jail. The investigation continued, leading to a second arrest on December 13, 2022. The second suspect, 23-year-old Ja'Corey M. Coleman, surrendered to the Henrico County Jail without incident. Coleman faced the same charges as Peroune: second-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
While these arrests marked significant progress in the investigation, authorities indicated that their work was not yet finished and they continued to seek information from the public. The untimely death of Durell Brown Jr. left his family and friends in mourning and raised concerns about the safety and security measures at the location of the incident.
