Trooper Ricky Marshall McCoy, a 29-year-old Virginia State Police officer, tragically lost his life on January 3, 1986, near Salem, Virginia. On that fateful day, Trooper McCoy responded to reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on Interstate 81. As he approached the vehicle, the suspects ambushed him, shooting him in the face with a sawed-off shotgun. Despite being wounded, Trooper McCoy attempted to crawl back to his patrol car, but one of the suspects shot and killed him.
