Clarence Edward Simmons, a Deputy Sheriff in Roanoke County, Virginia, was tragically killed on April 17, 1936, at the age of 44. His death was a result of a retaliatory attack by two brothers who sought vengeance for the death of their third brother during a police pursuit. Deputy Simmons was on patrol on Franklin Road, two miles south of Uncle Tom's BBQ, when a vehicle pulled alongside him, and the occupants opened fire with a shotgun.
