On January 2nd, 25-year-old Dana Lee Thrall, a female, was found brutally murdered in her own home. She had been pistol-whipped and shot three times in the head. Also discovered at the scene was the body of her 30-year-old companion, Robert Finch, who had been shot in the head, chest, and back.
The horrific discovery was made even more chilling by the fact that Thrall's two young children were present in the townhouse at the time of the slayings, though they were physically unharmed upstairs.
The investigation into the double homicide soon uncovered a complex and jealousy-fueled motive. The man responsible for the brutal slayings was identified as Larry Bill Elliott, a former Army intelligence officer from Maryland. The root of the violence was Elliott's relationship with a woman named Rebecca Gragg, an ex-stripper with whom Robert Finch shared two children. Elliott and Gragg had met through an online advertisement where she was seeking a 'sugar daddy.' Over their 18-month relationship, Elliott had lavished her with approximately $450,000, providing her with furnished homes, a car, and even cosmetic surgery. Larry Bill Elliott was subsequently arrested and faced the full weight of the justice system. He was charged with the capital murder of Dana Thrall and the first-degree murder of Robert Finch. His initial trial in the summer of 2002 ended in a mistrial. However, a second trial the following year brought a different outcome. In 2003, a jury convicted Elliott on all counts. For the murder of Dana Thrall, he was sentenced to death. For the killing of Robert Finch, he received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
