In the early morning hours of February 2, 2024, 23-year-old Egypt Zapporah Carter was found shot to death inside her car in Woodbridge, Virginia. The grim discovery on Bronson Court and Brickwood Drive marked the beginning of a complex investigation that would unravel a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated from behind prison walls. Carter, a recent college graduate from Burlington, North Carolina, had been lured to the location under the false pretense of picking up prescription narcotics for her husband. Instead, she was ambushed and fatally shot while still seated in her vehicle. A small dog was found unharmed in the car with her.
The investigation soon revealed that Carter's husband, 34-year-old Lionel Melvin Carter III, was the alleged mastermind behind the killing. At the time of his wife's murder, Lionel Carter was already incarcerated at Sussex State Prison, serving a lengthy sentence for the 2014 murder of a former girlfriend. It is believed that he orchestrated the murder plot because his wife intended to leave him. Friends and family of Egypt Carter reported that Lionel had threatened her life when she expressed her desire to end the relationship.
Four men, including Lionel Carter, were ultimately indicted in connection with the murder-for-hire scheme. The other suspects were identified as 26-year-old Grorethas Gresean McKinnon Jr., 30-year-old Denzel Scott Wade, and 27-year-old Drew Courtney Buchanan. Investigators determined that these men were involved in either carrying out the murder, being present during the crime, or assisting in the arrangement of the killing. Arrests were made in October 2024, with Buchanan being apprehended on October 15 and Wade on October 29. All four men were in custody by December 2024, and faced charges including aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and conspiracy to commit murder.
As the case progressed, plea deals were reached with two of the co-defendants. Drew C. Buchanan, identified as the gunman, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for his cooperation. He had reportedly been promised $10,000 for the killing. Denzel Scott Wade, who was with Buchanan during the shooting, pleaded guilty to accessory after the murder and was sentenced to one year in prison. The trial for the alleged mastermind, Lionel Carter, is scheduled for the following April. The case has brought to light a tragic story of domestic violence that escalated to a meticulously planned execution.
