In the quiet community of Woodbridge, Virginia, the life of 19-year-old Karrie Ayline Sotelo was tragically cut short on October 17, 2022. She was a vibrant college student with a passion for K-Pop, known for her kind and open-minded nature. Friends and family remember her as a smart and wonderful person who was always willing to help others. Karrie, a female, had her entire future ahead of her, but it was stolen in a senseless act of violence that also claimed the lives of her mother, Kelly
Sotelo, her stepfather, Miguel Flores, and a family friend, Richard Julio Jesus Revollar Corrales.
The horrific events unfolded inside the family's home on Mansfield Court, where they lived with David Nathaniel Maine, 24 at the time. On that fateful day, Maine first sexually assaulted and then fatally stabbed Karrie Sotelo. Her body was later found rolled in a blanket with her hands bound. He then shot and killed Richard Revollar Corrales. When Karrie's mother and stepfather returned home, Maine shot and killed Miguel Flores. Kelly Sotelo was also found shot and killed inside the residence. Another of Kelly's daughters, a 13-year-old, managed to escape to a neighbor's house to call 911. Maine also contacted 911, initially claiming that an unknown intruder was responsible for the killings.
Responding officers found a gruesome scene with the four victims in different parts of the house. Maine was located by police walking in the neighborhood and was taken into custody. His initial claims of an intruder were quickly dismissed by investigators. Evidence, including a note on his computer where he wrote 'I should not have killed them,' and DNA evidence confirming the rape of Karrie Sotelo, pointed directly to his guilt. Investigators also found an AR-15 rifle and a. 22 caliber handgun at the scene.
David Nathaniel Maine was arrested and charged with four counts of murder and other related offenses. In January 2025, Maine pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder, as well as charges of rape, abduction with intent to defile, and forcible sodomy of Karrie Sotelo, and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a murder. In August 2025, a judge sentenced the now 27-year-old Maine to six life sentences plus an additional 53 years in prison for the brutal crimes, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
