On what should have been a day of proud beginnings, newly sworn-in Prince William County Police Officer Ashley Guindon, a 28-year-old female, met a tragic end on the evening of February 27, 2016. It was her very first shift on patrol in Woodbridge, Virginia, when she and two fellow officers responded to a domestic disturbance call that quickly escalated into a scene of devastating violence. The call originated from the home of Army Staff Sgt.
Ronald Hamilton, who was in a heated argument with his wife, Crystal Hamilton.
Upon their arrival at the suburban home, the officers approached the front door to investigate the 911 call made by Crystal. Without warning, Ronald Hamilton opened fire on the officers with a rifle. Guindon was fatally wounded in the barrage of gunfire, her life cut short on the very day she began her sworn duty to protect the community. Two other officers, Jesse Hempen and David McKeown, were also struck by bullets but survived their critical injuries. Inside the residence, police discovered the body of 29-year-old Crystal Hamilton, who had been shot and killed by her husband before the officers' arrival. The couple's 11-year-old son was present in the home during the horrific events but managed to escape physically unharmed.
Ronald Hamilton, a Pentagon-based IT specialist for the Joint Staff Support Center, surrendered to additional officers who arrived at the scene and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with capital murder for the deaths of both Officer Guindon and his wife, as well as multiple counts of malicious wounding for the injuries sustained by the other two officers and firearms offenses. After being taken into custody, Hamilton admitted to shooting his wife and the police officers.
The trial of Ronald Hamilton commenced in September 2018. His defense team argued that he had 'snapped' in a heat of passion after months of marital strife, while prosecutors contended the murders were premeditated. In September 2018, Hamilton was convicted on multiple charges, including three counts of capital murder. During the sentencing phase, the prosecution sought the death penalty. However, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision on his sentence for the murder of Crystal Hamilton, resulting in a deadlock. Under Virginia law, this automatically resulted in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. For the murder of Officer Guindon, the jury unanimously agreed on a life sentence. In March 2019, Ronald Hamilton was formally sentenced to seven consecutive life terms in prison.
