In a tragic turn of events on February 27, 2016, 29-year-old Crystal Hamilton was shot and killed in her Woodbridge, Virginia, home. The devastating incident unfolded after a heated argument between Crystal and her husband, Ronald Hamilton, an Army staff sergeant. The dispute reportedly began over Crystal's plans to go out with friends. In the midst of the escalating conflict, Ronald Hamilton threw his wife against a wall, prompting her to call 911 for help. Their 11-year-old son was in the house at the time and overheard the altercation. Before police could arrive, Ronald Hamilton fatally shot his wife.
The tragedy compounded when responding police officers arrived at the scene. Ronald Hamilton opened fire on the officers with a military-style rifle, killing Officer Ashley Guindon, who was on her very first shift. Two other officers, Jesse Hempen and David McKeown, were also wounded in the shooting. After the shootings, Ronald Hamilton surrendered to the police and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of capital murder for the deaths of his wife and Officer Guindon, along with other offenses.
During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Ronald Hamilton as a jealous and controlling husband. His defense attorney argued that he 'just snapped' and that the killings were not premeditated. The couple's son provided a written statement that was read in court, in which he described hearing gunshots and then his mother falling silent. In September 2018, a jury found Ronald Hamilton guilty of capital murder.
The sentencing phase of the trial brought emotional testimony from the families of both victims. Prosecutors sought the death penalty, but the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision on the sentence for Crystal Hamilton's murder. They did, however, unanimously agree to a life sentence for the murder of Officer Guindon. Due to the deadlock on the first capital murder charge, Ronald Hamilton ultimately received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
