In the early morning hours of May 28, 2003, a sense of duty called 23-year-old Chesterfield County Police Officer Ryan Eugene Cappelletty to a neighborhood in Midlothian, Virginia. Reports of gunshots had disturbed the quiet of South Ridge Drive, and Cappelletty, a recent graduate of the police academy, responded to the scene with a fellow officer.
It was a call that would tragically be his last, cutting short a life of promise and service.
Upon their arrival shortly before 7:00 a.m., the officers were confronted by a man armed with a gun in the front lawn of a residence. The situation escalated rapidly as the individual opened fire on the officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, both Officer Cappelletty and the suspect were critically injured. Cappelletty was rushed to CJW Medical Center, but his wounds proved fatal. The male suspect also died at the scene from the injuries he sustained.
Just five months after graduating from the academy, Officer Cappelletty's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. He was survived by his wife, Rachel, his parents, and a sister. The community mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who was remembered as a wonderful young man with his whole life ahead of him. The suspect in his death was also killed during the incident, leaving no arrests to be made in the case.
