In the quiet, early morning hours of Sunday, March 17, 2024, the peacefulness of the Brandermill neighborhood in Midlothian, Virginia, was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots. Chesterfield County Police were dispatched to the 13600 block of Northwich Drive at approximately 3:29 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered a young man inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Barry O. Jordan, a Black male who resided on Norwich Drive.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Barry O. Jordan, affectionately known as 'BJ,' quickly commenced as detectives began to piece together the events of that fatal morning. In the days following the shooting, police appealed to the public for assistance, asking residents in the area to review their surveillance footage for any unusual activity between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Authorities initially stated that they believed the shooting to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community.
Within a month, the investigation led to a significant breakthrough. In April, detectives identified their first suspect and obtained warrants for 29-year-old Markice D. Street of Dinwiddie, Virginia. He was arrested on April 11 and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. An additional charge for shooting into an occupied vehicle was added the following day.
The investigation did not stop there. As detectives continued to follow leads, a second suspect was identified. On July 9, warrants were issued for 26-year-old Lamont A. Jones of Petersburg, Virginia. He was located and apprehended in Alamance County, North Carolina, on July 17 by the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Jones was extradited back to Chesterfield County on July 31 and faced the same charges as Street: second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Police confirmed that both Street and Jones were known to Jordan. Both men are being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail as they await further legal proceedings.
