In the late spring of 2004, the life of a young man was tragically cut short in Chesapeake, Virginia. Joel U. Smithwick, Jr., a 20-year-old male, was killed by a gunshot on May 1, 2004. A native of Williamston, North Carolina, Joel was known affectionately as "The Brickman" for his work as a bricklayer with Autumn Brix Blox. He was a resident of Chesapeake at the time of his death.
