In the quiet neighborhood of Chesapeake, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Stanford Sharpe was cut short on the evening of Thursday, January 19, 2023. A single, loud 'pop' heard by a neighbor on Candlelight Drive signaled the tragic event that would unfold. That neighbor then witnessed the harrowing scene of individuals being carried into a red Ford.
Responding to a 911 call about a possible shooting, police were also alerted to a red Ford driving on North Battlefield Boulevard.
After a few attempts, officers were able to pull the vehicle over near the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Inside, they made a grim discovery in the back seat: the lifeless body of Stanford Sharpe, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The two other occupants of the car, both 18 years old, were identified as Jason Brown and Dylan Albert. They had been attempting to transport Sharpe to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before they could arrive.
The investigation that followed began to piece together the events of that night. At the residence on Candlelight Lane, officers found a trail of blood leading from the front door to the driveway. During questioning, Dylan Albert reportedly told police that they had been playing with a gun. However, a search of the car and the home did not initially yield the weapon. The nine-millimeter handgun was later brought to the police station by Jason Brown's brother, who stated that Brown had given it to him in a bag before they tried to rush Sharpe to the hospital.
Both Jason Brown and Dylan Albert were arrested and faced multiple charges, including reckless use of a firearm and obstruction of justice. The incident left a community in shock and a family mourning the loss of a young man.
