In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, 40-year-old Martario Gee lost his life in Chesapeake, Virginia. The incident unfolded on February 12, when police were summoned to a residence on Grady Crescent for a reported domestic argument. Upon their arrival, they discovered Gee unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was subsequently transported to Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later confirmed that he had sustained a single gunshot wound to the back.
The investigation into Gee's death quickly focused on 23-year-old Tia Johnson. Johnson was present inside the residence when law enforcement arrived to investigate the initial call. A forensic analysis of her phone uncovered a video recording of an argument between her and Gee that occurred shortly before a disconnected 911 call was made. Johnson placed a second call to 911, claiming that police intervention was no longer necessary as the victim had left the premises.
Key evidence in the case came from a doorbell camera at the residence. The footage captured Gee leaving the home and walking out of the camera's view. Moments later, the camera recorded Johnson pointing a firearm in the direction Gee had walked and firing a shot. Detectives later discovered a single shell casing outside of the residence. This evidence was instrumental in the case against her.
Tia Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the death of Martario Gee. Following a trial, she was convicted of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder. For her crimes, Johnson faces a potential sentence of up to life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced for the murder of Martario Gee on May 19, 2025.
