On his 20th birthday, Michael Key Brown Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot in Richmond, Virginia. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of March 13, 2011, after Brown had just left Club Aurora located downtown. He was shot at the intersection of Fourth and East Main streets and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Brown was looking forward to attending the Virginia University of Lynchburg in the fall.
Three months after the shooting, Richmond Police detectives
made arrests in the case. Cory L. Worthington, 22, Giovanni M. Williford, 22, and Willie T. Seaward III, 22, were all taken into custody. The arrests were made by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and Third Precinct officers. All three men were charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Brown's death.
The tragedy was compounded for the Brown family when Michael's father, Michael Brown Sr., passed away almost two months after his son's death. Friends and family reported that the elder Brown struggled to manage his own health after the loss of his only son, whom he affectionately called 'Mike-Mike,' and he ultimately fell into a diabetic coma.
