On a tragic evening in May, the life of 51-year-old Jeffrey Alan Summers was cut short in a violent home invasion in Newport News, Virginia. On Monday, May 16, 2011, three masked individuals armed with long guns forced their way into Summers' residence on South Menchville Road.
Inside the home, the intruders confronted Summers and three other people. Another man present was struck with the butt of a rifle, and he, along with two others, were forced to the floor.
In the ensuing chaos, Jeffrey Alan Summers was shot. The assailants' attempt at a robbery was apparently thwarted when a pit bull in the house attacked them, causing them to flee the scene without taking anything.
Emergency services were called, and Summers was rushed to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead just before 7:00 a.m. the following morning, Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
