In the summer of 2011, a confrontation in Norfolk, Virginia, tragically ended the life of 30-year-old Richard Benjamin Harris. On June 16th of that year, Harris sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest and abdomen, cutting short the life of a young man remembered by his family and friends.
The events leading to Harris's death involved another man, Wesley Darren Walker.
According to accounts that would later be presented in court, a dispute between the two men escalated to a fatal encounter. A witness to the incident, Mikayla Bunch, who was Harris's girlfriend at the time, testified that Walker brought a firearm to the confrontation and shot Harris at close range.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Wesley Darren Walker was arrested and subsequently indicted by a Grand Jury on August 17, 2011. He faced a series of grave charges: First Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Nonviolent Convicted Felon. The prosecution built their case around the testimony of their key witness, aiming to hold Walker accountable for the death of Richard Harris.
The case against Wesley Walker proceeded to a jury trial, which commenced in October of 2012. During the trial, Walker presented a different version of the events of that fateful day. He testified that it was Richard Harris who had brought the gun to their meeting. Walker claimed that he managed to disarm Harris, and in the ensuing struggle for control of the weapon, the firearm accidentally discharged, striking Harris. This defense painted a picture of a tragic accident rather than a malicious act. After considering all the evidence and testimony, the jury rendered its verdict on October 26, 2012. Wesley Darren Walker was acquitted of the charges of First Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
