In the early morning hours of November 7, 2011, the quiet of the Port Norfolk neighborhood in Portsmouth, Virginia, was broken by the sound of gunfire. Responding to calls, police discovered the body of 42-year-old Michelle Renee McClendon in the street in the 500 block of Chautauqua Avenue, not far from her own home. She had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden and violent end to her life left her family, including her son, Tyler, and her mother, Gloria Orrock, devastated and searching for answers. In the days following the shooting, neighbors recalled being startled awake by the noise, with one running outside to see McClendon lying in the street.
For years, Michelle's case grew cold, her death remaining one of the city's unsolved homicides with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. The investigation remained open, but progress was elusive, leaving a lingering sense of injustice for her loved ones. The passage of time did little to heal the wounds of her family, who were left to mourn a woman remembered as a sweet and pretty person, cherished by those who knew her.
Over a decade later, a breakthrough finally came. In September 2023, the Portsmouth Police Department assigned the case to a cold case investigator. Through persistent work and re-interviewing witnesses, the investigator was able to identify a suspect: Cameron Lamar Parker. At the time of being identified, Parker was already incarcerated, serving a prison sentence for a 2007 murder that occurred in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The investigation revealed that Parker had killed McClendon because he believed she was 'snitching' on him. Witnesses who came forward over the years provided information that corroborated the story, stating that Parker shot Michelle multiple times as she was walking down the avenue. With this new evidence, he was charged with her murder. In December 2024, closing a 13-year chapter of uncertainty and pain for McClendon's family, Cameron Lamar Parker pleaded guilty to manslaughter. His sentence for her death will run concurrently with the sentence he is already serving for the prior murder conviction.
