In the early hours of a January morning in Norfolk, Virginia, a person walking along Craig Street made a grim discovery. On the sidewalk lay the body of Thomas Deon Valentine, a 42-year-old man who lived nearby. Police were called to the scene around 3:00 a.m. on January 17, 2012, where they found that Valentine had been shot. A resident in the area reported hearing gunfire at about the same time the police were summoned.
The investigation into Thomas Valentine's death revealed a story
of revenge. Detectives were able to identify a suspect, Grenah Garnett, through video footage from near the crime scene and his fingerprints found on a car involved in the incident. The motive for the killing was traced back to a prior altercation in which Garnett himself had been shot and was seeking retaliation.
Following the investigation, Grenah Garnett was arrested and charged with the murder of Thomas Valentine. He was subsequently convicted for the crime and sentenced to serve 33 years in prison. The medical examiner's report confirmed that Valentine died from a single gunshot wound to the back. The bullet caused devastating internal injuries, passing through his aorta, lung, and sternum before exiting from his neck, leading to his immediate death at the scene. Thomas Valentine was a Black/African American male.
