In the late hours of a Monday night in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 16-year-old Ricky LaTwan Platt was tragically cut short. On October 2, 2012, the Black / African American male was fatally shot at the Heritage Trace Apartments located in the Denbigh area of the city. Police responded to a call of shots fired just after midnight and discovered the teenager in the parking lot, lying next to a dumpster. He had sustained at least one gunshot wound to his torso.
Despite the efforts of medics to revive him, Ricky was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:19 a.m.
At the time of the incident, Ricky was a 10th-grade student who had been dealing with some personal challenges at home, which had led him to temporarily live with a family friend. He had recently returned to his mother's home, which was just a few feet from where his body was found. Known for his great sense of humor and love for hip-hop music, Ricky was remembered by his family for his beautiful smile. His sudden and violent death left his family and the community grappling with a profound loss and a search for answers.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials had not identified any suspects or determined a possible motive for the killing. Ricky's grieving family, including his aunt, Chandra White, made a public plea for anyone with information to come forward to the police to help bring justice for Ricky.
