In the late hours of a spring evening in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 23-year-old Stephen D. White was tragically cut short. On April 17, 2020, police responded to a call around 11:40 p.m. in the 600 block of 25th Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered White deceased at the scene, the victim of a fatal shooting. He was a graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk and worked at a Target warehouse.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to two suspects.
Sh'Kise Faizon Cappe, a 23-year-old man from Hampton, was one of the individuals arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Surveillance footage from the area reportedly showed three individuals fleeing the scene shortly after the gunshots rang out. Cappe ultimately faced a jury and was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A judge, describing the act as a 'cold-blooded execution,' sentenced him to a total of 56 years in prison. The motive behind the killing remained unclear during the court proceedings.
A second suspect, 21-year-old Alton Kasine Powers, also from Hampton, was arrested and charged with White's murder. His trial was scheduled to take place in Newport News Circuit Court. The resolution of the case against Powers was still pending as the legal process continued to unfold, leaving a community to grapple with a senseless act of violence that took a young life.
