In the fall of 2013, the life of 25-year-old William Alexander 'Alex' Apps was tragically cut short in what police described as a planned and senseless act of violence. Apps, a College of Charleston student, had placed an advertisement on Craigslist to sell his pickup truck, a decision that would ultimately lead to his death.
On October 3, 2013, Apps arranged to meet two prospective buyers in Charleston.
The men, later identified as Jquan Marquel Scott, 19, and Isaac Romell Williams, 20, met with Apps under the pretense of a test drive. During that drive, as they crossed the Ravenel Bridge, Apps was shot and killed. His body was later found in a wooded area in Mount Pleasant.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Scott and Williams after they were discovered to be using Apps's debit card and driving his truck in the days following his disappearance. Authorities were able to track their movements, which led to their apprehension. In the course of the investigation, Scott confessed to the murder and led police to the location of Apps's body.
Both Scott and Williams were arrested and faced a litany of charges, including murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The subsequent legal proceedings revealed the calculated nature of the crime. Evidence presented included text messages from Scott seeking a gun prior to the meeting with Apps. It was determined that the motive was to steal the victim's truck.
In May 2015, Jquan Scott pleaded guilty to murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Isaac Romell Williams also pleaded guilty to murder and received a 40-year prison sentence for his role in the crime.
