In the late morning of August 6, 2023, tragedy struck in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, when 32-year-old Akeem Hasun Jones was fatally shot. The incident occurred on Stuart Street, prompting a swift response from the Charleston Police Department who arrived at the scene near Johnson and America Streets around 10:58 a.m. to find Jones suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported Jones to the Medical University of South Carolina, but his injuries proved too
severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The death of the North Charleston resident launched a homicide investigation as detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
Within days, the investigation led to a significant development. On August 11, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended 29-year-old Jaques Demetrius Jenkins-Smith of North Charleston in connection with the death of Jones. Jenkins-Smith was subsequently charged with Murder and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime. He was taken into custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
