On October 22, 2018, Richard W. Patterson Jr., a 24-year-old resident of Pinopolis, South Carolina, was found deceased in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle in Berkeley County. The discovery was made when a property owner on Tairney Lane in St. Stephen noticed the vehicle parked on a side road and, upon locating the keys, found Patterson's body in the cargo area.
