On an autumn evening in Virginia Beach, Virginia, a young man’s life was tragically cut short. Twenty-year-old Kristopher Daniel Lee was found lying on the ground near some townhouses in the Level Green area on October 29, 2013. He had been shot, and despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation into the shooting quickly turned into a homicide case, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated.
Detectives diligently worked
the case, and their investigation led them to two suspects. In March 2014, Jordan Diangelo Champion and Daushawn Latrez Newton were indicted in connection with Lee's death. The investigation revealed that the fatal shooting was the result of a planned robbery. Champion was identified as the shooter and faced charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm, and conspiracy to commit a felony. Newton was also implicated in the crime, initially facing charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm.
The legal proceedings brought some measure of justice for Kristopher Daniel Lee and his loved ones. Daushawn Latrez Newton ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder. He was sentenced to ten years in prison, with a significant portion of that time suspended, resulting in an active sentence of six years and five months. Jordan Diangelo Champion, the man who pulled the trigger, faced a much harsher penalty. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 13 years for the related firearm and conspiracy charges.
