In the Highland Park neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia, a burst of gunfire on the evening of December 11, 2013, shattered the night and left two men with life-threatening injuries. One of the victims was 20-year-old Kevin L. Dickerson Jr., a resident of the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike. The shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the 2400 block of Third Avenue.
Both Dickerson and the other unidentified man were rushed to VCU Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Kevin Dickerson succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. Known to his loved ones as 'Lil Bill,' he was a father to one daughter.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Richmond police opened what they termed a 'death investigation.' However, in a departure from typical procedure in shooting fatalities, authorities stated that they were not investigating the incident as a homicide. They did not provide any further explanation for this classification. No information regarding any suspects or arrests in connection with the shooting has been made public.
