In the spring of 2024, just two days shy of his high school graduation, 18-year-old Tyshawn White's promising future was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of May 22nd, Richmond Police were called to a residence on the 1600 block of Edwards Avenue in the city's southside for a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival at approximately 1:27 p.m., a relative directed officers inside the home where they discovered Tyshawn unresponsive.
The young man, a Black male, had sustained an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have characterized the incident as a break-in and shooting. Tyshawn, a student at Meadowbrook High School, was on the verge of celebrating a significant milestone. He had plans to attend Richard Bland College in the fall to study HVAC, with long-term aspirations of becoming a dentist. Those who knew him described him as a kind, quiet, and respectful individual who loved basketball and his family deeply. His mother, in a testament to her son's memory, planned to walk across the stage in his honor at his graduation ceremony.
The Richmond Police Department's Major Crimes detectives are actively investigating the homicide and have been seeking surveillance footage from the surrounding area to aid in their inquiry. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Tyshawn White's death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact either the Major Crimes Detective G. Sullivan or Crime Stoppers. The community has been left to mourn the loss of a young life filled with potential, as his family continues to seek answers and justice.
