In the early morning hours of July 12, 2014, the life of 21-year-old Tyquan D. Woods, a Black male from Hampton, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Police responded to multiple 911 calls about gunshots and discovered Woods on a sidewalk in the 200 block of North Back River Road, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Nearby, a 25-year-old man was also found with life-threatening injuries.
This second victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident was not a random act of violence. According to police, Woods and the other victim knew the individuals who shot them. An argument escalated into a physical altercation, which then led to firearms being drawn and the victims being shot. After being shot, the 25-year-old victim managed to get into a Chevrolet Impala and drive a short distance before crashing and seeking help.
Hampton Police identified two suspects in the case: Calvin Jamar Schofield, who was 22 at the time, and Larry Devon Scott, then 25. Schofield was arrested on July 17, 2014, and charged with one count of homicide and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Scott, however, remained at large and was considered armed and dangerous. For years, he evaded capture, leaving Woods's family waiting for justice.
A significant break in the case came nearly three years later. On May 22, 2017, Larry Devon Scott was apprehended in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His arrest brought a sense of relief and a step toward closure for Woods's family. Scott faced multiple charges, including murder, aggravated maiming, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was also wanted for an unrelated incident of assaulting a law enforcement officer that occurred in 2015.
