On a summer day in August 2014, the life of 46-year-old Laura Phelps Hess was tragically cut short in her Lynchburg, Virginia, residence. A white female, Hess was found deceased on August 1st, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. The sorrow of her passing was soon compounded by the deeply disturbing nature of the ensuing investigation, which pointed to a suspect from within her own family.
