On a cold winter day in Lynchburg, Virginia, the life of 37-year-old Stacy M. Young-Ritchie was tragically cut short. On January 20, 2014, she was found deceased in a home, the victim of a violent encounter that also resulted in the death of a man with whom she was in a relationship. The sorrowful event was later determined by authorities to be a murder-suicide.
Stacy, a mother of two daughters, was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound. Also found dead at the scene was 44-year-old Mario R. Gully. The Lynchburg Police Department’s investigation into the deaths concluded that Gully shot and killed Ritchie before turning the gun on himself. This conclusion brought a somber clarity to the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of two lives.
The Commonwealth's Attorney's office reviewed the findings of the police investigation and officially ruled the case a murder-suicide. This determination meant that with the perpetrator also deceased, no further criminal proceedings would follow. The community was left to mourn the loss of Stacy Ritchie, a woman whose life was taken in a final, violent act.
