In the early morning hours of a Sunday in November 2014, the life of Randy Smith Jr., a 38-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short on a street on Richmond's Southside. On November 23rd, police were called to the 3200 block of Decatur Street after reports of gunfire echoed through the neighborhood. Upon arrival, they discovered two men on the ground. Randy Smith Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, 21-year-old Jayquan L.
Powell, was found with life-threatening injuries and rushed to VCU Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Powell succumbed to his injuries later that night. The incident was a double homicide that left the community reeling and searching for answers that have yet to come. Both men were known in their respective communities, and their sudden deaths were met with shock and grief.
