In the city of Franklin, Virginia, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a violent encounter. Martinez D. Hill, a 22-year-old male, was fatally wounded on the night of December 12, 2014. The evening began with reports of shots fired in the 1400 block of Rosewood Avenue. When officers arrived to investigate the scene, they initially found no evidence of a victim. The grim reality of the situation became apparent shortly thereafter at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
At the hospital's emergency room, a man with a gunshot wound had been dropped off by individuals who then quickly departed. That man was identified as Martinez D. Hill. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his head while riding in a car. Due to the severity of his injury, he was airlifted to Norfolk General Hospital for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Hill succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into the homicide led Franklin Police to identify a suspect in the case. A few days following the shooting, 23-year-old Joseph McDonald Lynch Jr., also from Franklin, surrendered to the authorities. He faced a series of serious charges in connection with Hill's death, including murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and discharging a firearm in public resulting in death. Following his surrender, Lynch was held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail as the legal proceedings against him commenced.
